Introduction

In times of trouble, we often seek refuge in God, but do we approach Him with the right conditions of heart? The Holy Scriptures reveal that our conditions in Christ Jesus are the same ones we need when seeking refuge in Him – desperation, acknowledged weakness, need, and trust. This article explores these conditions, citing biblical references to support the argument.

Desperation and Weakness

The Bible teaches that we come to God as sinners, condemned to death, and powerless to redeem ourselves (Romans 3:23, 6:23). Our desperation drives us to seek mercy and grace, rather than demanding or deserving (Luke 18:13-14). This humble approach is evident in the psalmist’s cry, “I am poor and needy, come quickly to me, O God!” (Psalm 70:5).

Faith and Trust

By faith, we accept Jesus Christ’s finished work, acknowledging our inability to save ourselves (Ephesians 2:8-9). This faith leads us to trust in God’s sovereignty and love, even in trials (Romans 8:28). The writer of Hebrews encourages us to “hold firmly to the faith we profess” and to “approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (Hebrews 4:14, 16).

Seeking Refuge

When we run to God for refuge from life’s travails, we must do so from a place of desperation, seeking mercy and grace. David’s psalm declares, “I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I will be saved from my enemies” (Psalm 18:3). Our cry should echo the prophet’s, “O Lord, in distress we seek You; when we are oppressed, we call upon Your name” (Isaiah 26:16).

Conclusion

As we seek refuge in Christ, let us come with the conditions of desperation, acknowledged weakness, need, and trust. May our faith lead us to plead for mercy and seek grace, knowing that our loving Father welcomes us with open arms.
