Introduction

As believers, we are blessed with a unique perspective on life that enables us to navigate its challenges with hope and confidence. Our lives are not defined solely by the present moment, but are instead informed by the promise of eternal life beyond this temporal existence. This dual perspective allows us to approach life’s struggles and triumphs with a sense of purpose and meaning that is not available to those who do not share our faith.

Temporal Life: A Season of Growth and Preparation

In this life, we face various struggles that can either weaken us or strengthen us, depending on how we respond to them. For believers, these challenges are opportunities for growth, maturity, and wisdom. As we navigate the ups and downs of life, we are refined and purified, much like gold is refined in the fire (1 Peter 1:7). This process of refinement equips us with the strength and resilience needed to face the future with confidence.

Eternal Life: A Hope That Sustains Us

On the other hand, our hope of eternal life provides a sense of anticipation and joy that sustains us through the trials of this life. We know that our struggles are temporary, and that they will one day give way to the glory and beauty of eternal life. This hope is not just a vague promise, but a certainty that is grounded in the character and promises of God (John 14:2-3).

The Atmosphere of Life: Synchronized for Flourishing

For believers, the “weather and climate” of life are synchronized to optimize the atmosphere of life for flourishing and sustainable living. This means that God works all things together for our good (Romans 8:28), even when we cannot see the outcome. Our struggles and triumphs, our joys and sorrows, are all part of a larger narrative that is being written by a sovereign God who loves us and desires our well-being.

The Pillar of Support and Hedge of Protection

One of the greatest blessings of the believer is the knowledge that God establishes the pillar that supports our lives and sustains it so that it does not collapse. He provides a hedge of protection that surrounds us and our beloved family, shielding us from harm and danger (Psalm 121:3). This assurance brings security, peace, and confidence to our lives, enabling us to face the future with hope and expectation.

God’s Divine Presence: A Constant Companion

Perhaps the greatest gift of all is the presence of God in our lives. His divine presence follows us all the days of our lives, providing guidance, comfort, and strength (Deuteronomy 31:8). In Christ Jesus, we have a Savior who understands our weaknesses and limitations, and who is always available to help us in times of need (Hebrews 4:15-16).

Conclusion

In conclusion, the life of a believer is marked by a wonderful atmosphere of hope, peace, and confidence. We know that our struggles are temporary, and that our future is secure in the hands of a loving God. As we navigate the ups and downs of life, we can trust in His sovereignty and goodness, knowing that He is working all things together for our good. May we live each day with the assurance of God’s presence and protection, and may our lives be a reflection of the hope and joy that we have in Christ Jesus.

The Paradox of the Believer’s Life: Faith and Sacrifice

The life of a believer is often misunderstood as one of ease and prosperity, where every prayer is answered with success and happiness. However, this perception is far from the reality that many believers experience. In fact, the life of a believer is normatively a life of sacrifice, suffering, and submission. This paradox is rooted in the very nature of the Christian faith, which calls us to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ, who Himself lived a life of sacrifice and suffering.

The Call to Take Up Our Cross

Jesus Christ’s call to His disciples is clear: “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24). This call to take up our cross is not a call to prosperity, but to sacrifice. It is a call to put the interests of others before our own, to prioritize the kingdom of God above all else, and to be willing to suffer for the sake of the Gospel.

The Reality of the Believer’s Life

The life of a believer is not one of ease and comfort, but of service, diligence, endurance, consistency, and loyalty to our calling. It is a life that requires us to be diligent in our walk with God, to persevere through trials and tribulations, and to remain consistent in our commitment to our faith. As the Apostle Paul wrote, “We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope” (Romans 5:3-4).

The Aberration of the Prosperity Gospel

The prosperity gospel, which promises health, wealth, and success to believers, is a distortion of the true Gospel of Jesus Christ. This false gospel ignores the reality of suffering and sacrifice that is inherent in the Christian life. It also ignores the biblical teaching that our citizenship is in heaven, and that we are strangers and pilgrims in this world (Philippians 3:20, 1 Peter 2:11).

The Biblical View of Suffering

The Bible does not shy away from the reality of suffering. In fact, it teaches that suffering is a natural part of the Christian life. As Peter wrote, “Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you” (1 Peter 4:12). Suffering is not something to be feared or avoided, but rather something that can be used by God to refine and strengthen our faith.

Conclusion

The life of a believer is a paradoxical one, marked by both faith and sacrifice. While we may experience moments of joy and prosperity, our lives are ultimately characterized by a willingness to suffer for the sake of the Gospel. This is not a call to masochism or unnecessary suffering, but rather a call to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ, who suffered and died for our sins. May we embrace this call to sacrifice and suffering, and may our lives be marked by service, diligence, endurance, consistency, and loyalty to our calling as if unto the Lord.
