Introduction

Loving God is a fundamental aspect of the Christian faith, and it is exemplified in the Book of Psalms, particularly in the psalms of David. David’s love for God is characterized by a deep longing to seek Him, thirst for Him, and delight in Him. This love is not just about obeying God’s commands or believing His word, but about admiring and enjoying all that He is.

A Heart that Longs for God

In Psalm 63:1-2, David expresses his deep longing for God, saying, “O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.” This psalm showcases David’s desire to behold God’s power and glory, and to experience His presence in his life.

The Essence of Loving God

Loving God is not just about external actions, such as obeying His commands or attending church services. Rather, it is about having a deep-seated admiration and enjoyment of God’s character, His glory, and His presence in our lives. This love is the essence of what it means to be satisfied in God, and it is this satisfaction that makes our other responses to God truly glorifying.

Satisfied in God, Not Just His Gifts

David’s love for God is characterized by a deep satisfaction in God Himself, rather than just His gifts. This is evident in his statement, “One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple” (Psalm 27:4). David’s desire is to behold God’s beauty and to experience His presence, rather than just to receive His blessings.

The Importance of Fellowship

The importance of fellowship in loving God cannot be overstated. Just as a spouse feels most honored when their partner expresses delight in their company, God is most glorified when we are satisfied in Him and delight in His presence. This delight is not just about external actions, but about the internal workings of our hearts.

A Journey of Satisfaction

None of us has arrived at perfect satisfaction in God. However, by God’s grace, we can taste that the Lord is good and experience the fountain of everlasting joy. As we journey towards greater satisfaction in God, we can expect to experience a deeper love for Him, and a greater desire to behold His power and glory.

Conclusion

In conclusion, loving God is about admiring and enjoying all that He is. It is about being satisfied in Him, rather than just His gifts. As we seek to deepen our love for God, we can learn from David’s example in the Book of Psalms, and strive to behold God’s power and glory, and to experience His presence in our lives. By doing so, we can experience the joy and satisfaction that comes from loving God, and we can glorify Him in all that we do.
