Introduction
In celebration of the life and legacy of the Late Princess Florence Yemisi Megbolugbe, this article aims to highlight her remarkable generosity, selflessness, and impact on her community. Through personal reflections and anecdotes, we will explore the various facets of her life, from her charitable work and hospitality to her talents and passions. This tribute seeks to honor her memory and inspire others to follow in her footsteps.
A Life of Service and Charity
Growing up, I had the privilege of witnessing my mother’s charitable work in Ilorin, Eruku, and Kabba. She would often accommodate those in need, including strangers, without hesitation. Her love and compassion knew no bounds, and she would go out of her way to assist those who required help. I vividly remember the Agatu people from Benue State who would visit our village to give birth, and my mother would provide them with care and support.
A Heart of Gold
My mother’s house was always open to strangers and those around her, much like her own mother. She had a special place in her heart for those who were less fortunate, and she would often feed and care for them. Her generosity and kindness were qualities that defined her, and she was loved and respected by all who knew her.
Talents and Passions
In addition to her charitable work, my mother had a number of other talents and passions. She was an accomplished singer and dancer, and she would often lead the family choir in worship. She was also a creative cook, and her delicious meals were renowned in our community. Her love of cooking brought joy to many, including bishops and reverend pastors who would attend diocese meetings in Eruku.
A Legacy of Service
My mother’s legacy of service and charity continues to inspire me to this day. Her selflessness and kindness are qualities that I strive to emulate, and I am grateful for the example she set. As a matron of Methodist High School Eruku from 1981-1988, she demonstrated her commitment to serving others and making a positive impact in her community.
A Multifaceted Life
My mother was a multifaceted individual with various skills and talents. She excelled in catering jobs, particularly with pastry flour foods, and even participated in Maggi competitions, winning several prizes. Professionally, she was a fashion designer and tailor, skilled in knitting sweaters and making traditional caps called “fila onide.” She secured contracts from secondary schools for sweater uniforms and mentored many apprentices, creating beautiful garments throughout her life. She successfully combined sewing, knitting, and catering as a business to support her family.
The Family Adoption Program
One notable aspect of her life was adopting her late brother’s children, Prince Olawale Megbolugbe offsprings. She took in Boda James, and Boda Raphael, while other family members followed her lead by adopting the remaining children, including Boda Sunday, Sister Funmi, and Boda Adekunle. Today, all the children are successful, thanks to God’s grace.
Generosity Without Borders
Her generosity extended to her in-laws, and she was known for her bold and fearless nature. She would often take initiative, even in situations where others might hesitate. One remarkable example was when she discovered individuals resembling her husband in Eruku and took them in, providing for their education and care. Growing up, we had many “uncles,” “half-brothers,” and “sisters” who were treated like family. There are many more stories about my mother’s life and achievements that are worth sharing.
