In 2 Peter 3:1-15, Apostle Peter emphasizes the importance of wholesome thinking in the context of God’s redemption plan. He encourages believers to focus on the promise of Christ’s return and the new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness dwells (2 Peter 3:13).

Wholesome thinking, according to Peter, constitutes:

– A sober and calm mind (2 Peter 3:1-2)

– A focus on the Lord’s promise (2 Peter 3:4, 9)

– A mindset set on the new heavens and a new earth (2 Peter 3:13)

– A desire to be found spotless and blameless in Christ (2 Peter 3:14)

This type of thinking is necessary because it:

– Helps us remain grounded in our faith (2 Peter 3:1-2)

– Keeps us focused on eternity, not temporal things (2 Peter 3:11, 14)

– Encourages us to live holy lives, in light of Christ’s return (2 Peter 3:11-12, 14)

– Allows us to experience the grace of God in our lives (2 Peter 3:18)

As Apostle Paul also wrote, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:2, NIV). Wholesome thinking is consequential for the pursuit of holiness, as it enables us to fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).
