The True Focus of Worship: God’s Glory, Not Our Own

Worship is a fundamental aspect of Christian life, yet it’s easy to lose sight of its true purpose. As believers, we often fall into the trap of making worship about ourselves, our needs, and our emotions. However, the Holy Scriptures remind us that worship is ultimately about God, His glory, and His majesty.
In Psalm 22:3, David writes, “But You are holy, enthroned in the praises of Israel.” This verse highlights that God’s holiness is the central focus of worship, not our own feelings or experiences. Similarly, in John 4:23-24, Jesus declares, “But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for those who worship God must worship in spirit and truth.”
Worship is not about us; it’s about acknowledging and honoring God’s glory, majesty, and victory. As the famous Christian singer Kari Jobe suggests in one of her interviews, “Worshipping God in His Glory. Lifting His Name and Declaring Who God is makes the enemy flee.” This is evident in Scripture, where the enemy is often defeated through declarations of God’s power and glory (Psalm 68:1-3, 1 Samuel 17:45-47).
Christ’s victory is already secured, and our worship is a response to His triumph. We are called to declare His glory, honor, and majesty, exalting Him above all else (Psalm 95:1-3, Revelation 5:9-14). When we worship in this manner, it puts our lives as believers into perspective, recognizing that our ultimate purpose is to glorify God.
As A.W. Tozer writes, “The purpose of worship is not to get something from God but to give ourselves to Him” (Tozer, 1961, p. 12). Similarly, John MacArthur emphasizes, “Worship is not about us; it’s about God. It’s not about our feelings; it’s about His glory” (MacArthur, 2004, p. 123).
In conclusion, worship is not about our personal experiences or emotions but about acknowledging and honoring God’s glory, majesty, and victory. May we remember that true worship is a response to God’s greatness, exalting Him above all else.
