Introduction
Jesus warned His followers to “beware of false prophets” (Matthew 7:15), but this warning is often misinterpreted to mean we should be suspicious of other spiritual offices. In reality, God has established a hierarchy of spiritual offices, each with its own unique role and function. This article explores the biblical framework of spiritual offices, highlighting how each office hears from God and providing guidance on discerning true and false ministers.
The Hierarchy of Spiritual Offices
1. Prophets (Ephesians 4:11) – Receive revelation from God, speaking His words to edify, exhort, and correct (1 Corinthians 14:3).
2. Apostles (Ephesians 4:11) – Sent by God to establish and oversee churches, preaching the Gospel and laying foundations (1 Corinthians 9:1-2).
3. Evangelists (Ephesians 4:11) – Called to spread the Gospel, preaching salvation and repentance (Mark 16:15).
4. Teachers (Ephesians 4:11) – Responsible for explaining Scripture, guiding believers in doctrine and application (1 Timothy 3:2).
5. Pastors (Ephesians 4:11) – Shepherd God’s flock, providing spiritual guidance and care (1 Peter 5:2-4).
Discerning True and False Ministers
While all spiritual offices hear from God, false ministers can infiltrate the Church. Jesus taught us to discern by fruit, not position or title (Matthew 7:16-20). Look for:
– Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)
– Consistency with Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
– Humility and servanthood (Matthew 20:25-28)
– Love and compassion (1 Corinthians 13)
Conclusion
God has established a spiritual hierarchy to edify and equip the Church. While false prophets and ministers exist, we can discern truth by examining fruit, not office or title. Let us respect and honor genuine ministers, while rejecting those who contradict Scripture and lack spiritual fruit.
