Introduction
As believers, we often struggle to comprehend our identity and purpose within the grand narrative of God’s plan. The Bible reveals a progressive unfolding of God’s relationship with humanity, marked by distinct dispensations that shape our understanding of who we were, who we are, and who we will become. In this article, we’ll explore the various dispensations, from our state in the world to our ultimate glorification, and discover how to walk truthfully and effectively through each stage.
Dispensation 1: Darkness – Who We Were (Ephesians 2:1-3)
Before encountering God, we were lost in darkness, enslaved to sin, and separated from Him. Our identity was defined by rebellion and ignorance of God’s love.
Dispensation 2: Redemption – Who We Are in Christ (Ephesians 2:4-10)
Through faith in Christ, we experience redemption, becoming God’s people aspirationally and penultimately. We are:
– Chosen and adopted (Ephesians 1:4-5)
– Forgiven and justified (Romans 3:24-25)
– Sanctified and set apart (1 Corinthians 6:11)
Dispensation 3: Glorification – Who We Will Become (Romans 8:28-30)
Ultimately, we will be glorified, fully transformed into God’s people. We will:
– Be conformed to Christ’s image (Romans 8:29)
– Receive resurrected bodies (1 Corinthians 15:42-44)
– Reign with Christ in eternity (2 Timothy 2:12)
Walking Truthfully and Effectively Through the Dispensations
To navigate these dispensations, remember:
– Acknowledge your past darkness, but don’t dwell on it.
– Embrace your current identity in Christ, living out your sanctification.
– Anticipate your future glorification, allowing it to shape your present hope and actions.
Conclusion
Understanding the dispensations of God’s people helps us grasp our identity, purpose, and destiny. As we journey from darkness to glory, may we walk truthfully and effectively, embracing our aspirational and penultimate status as God’s people, while eagerly anticipating our ultimate glorification.
Practical Applications:
1. Live with humility: Recognize your past darkness and current sinfulness, acknowledging your need for God’s grace.
2. Embrace your identity: Confidently claim your status as God’s chosen, adopted, forgiven, and sanctified child.
3. Pursue sanctification: Cooperate with the Holy Spirit’s work in transforming you into Christ’s image.
4. Fix your gaze on eternity: Allow the hope of glorification to shape your priorities, decisions, and actions.
5. Share the journey: Encourage fellow believers and witness to unbelievers, highlighting God’s redemptive work.
Conclusion:
The dispensations of God’s people reveal a magnificent narrative of redemption, transformation, and glorification. As we understand and embrace our identity in Christ, we’ll walk more truthfully and effectively through the various stages, ultimately becoming the radiant, glorified children of God we were meant to be.
