Introduction
It’s often said that three things test your character, revealing your true self. I’ve faced these tests: appetites, fame and power. Through self-reflection and lessons learned, I’ve discovered my resilience and integrity.
Appetites: A Test of Self-Discipline
My mother taught me gratitude for simple pleasures, freeing me from desire and discontent. I don’t complain about food or lust after it, recognizing its fleeting nature. My late wife appreciated my contentment with any meal.
As a social drinker, I tried getting drunk but found it revealing and boring. Drinks now induce sleep or headaches.
Sex wasn’t a priority; I valued cuddling and conversation. Past experiences showed me that emotional intimacy mattered more.
Fame and Power: Tests of Humility and Integrity
Tasting fame didn’t change me; I remained grounded, recognizing its superficiality. People placed me on a pedestal, but I refused to stay.
A friend questioned if I had imposter syndrome. I acknowledged it to explain my humility and reluctance to wield power.
