As the Word for Today reminds us, God can call on us at any moment to serve Him. Just like a soldier must be ready for deployment to a war front, Christians must be prepared to answer God’s call to ministry. In Acts 9:10-17, we see an exemplary model of readiness in Ananias, who was willing to serve God despite the challenges and risks involved.
Why Readiness Matters
Readiness to serve is crucial for effective ministry because it demonstrates our willingness to obey God’s call, trust in His sovereignty, and surrender to His will. When we are ready, we can respond promptly to God’s assignments, just like Ananias did. Our readiness also shows that we value God’s purposes above our own fears, doubts, and limitations.
Characteristics of Readiness
Ananias’ story highlights key characteristics of readiness:
1. Attentiveness: Ananias was receptive to God’s vision and call.
2. Obedience: He trusted God and followed His instructions.
3. Courage: Ananias faced his fears and ministered to a former persecutor of Christians.
4. Love and acceptance: He acknowledged Saul as a brother in Christ, demonstrating love and acceptance.
Cultivating Readiness
To be ready for God’s call, we must:
1. Seek a deep relationship with God: Regularly pray, study His Word, and listen for His voice.
2. Develop a willingness to serve: Be open to God’s assignments, even if they challenge us.
3. Trust in God’s sovereignty: Have faith in His plans and purposes.
4. Surrender to His will: Let go of our fears, doubts, and limitations.
Conclusion
Readiness to serve is a prerequisite to effective ministry. As Christians, we must be prepared to answer God’s call, just like Ananias did. By cultivating attentiveness, obedience, courage, love, and acceptance, we can be ready to serve God and fulfill His purposes. Let us ask ourselves: if God needed us to do something for Him today, would we be ready?
