Introduction
My life’s journey is a testament to the unmerited favor of God, which has guided me through the darkest valleys and propelled me to unprecedented heights. Born into a family of promises, my life took an unexpected turn when my father, the patriarch, passed away when I was just three years old. The subsequent chaos and infighting within my family could have consumed me, but God’s providence intervened, and I found solace in a group of playmates who shielded me from the harsh realities of life.
As I navigated the turbulent waters of childhood, I began to struggle in school, lacking focus and discipline. My mother, though well-intentioned, was often away, trading in markets to provide for our family. It was during this time that I began to wander, seeking answers to questions that only God could answer. I was fortunate to have individuals who saw potential in me and invested in my life, coaching me in academic and character development.
One such person was Maiye Senior, a Grade Three teacher who took a keen interest in my life. He saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself – potential. His mentorship and guidance transformed my academic trajectory, and I began to excel. This newfound confidence propelled me to pursue excellence in all aspects of my life, from farming to correspondence education.
Throughout my journey, I’ve encountered individuals who have played pivotal roles in shaping my destiny. My brother, Olayinka Megbolugbe, encouraged me to strive for greatness, and his untimely passing only strengthened my resolve. The death benefits he left me enabled me to pursue my education, and I seized the opportunity, earning my GCE O’ and A’ Levels, and eventually, my undergraduate degree from the University of Ibadan.
As I reflect on my life, I’m reminded of the countless favors of God that have propelled me forward. From the playmates who shielded me from harm to the mentors who invested in my life, God’s hand has been evident. Even in the face of familial rejection and adversity, God’s favor has been my constant companion.
My story is a testament to the power of God’s sovereign providence, which can transform even the most unlikely of circumstances into opportunities for growth and success. I’m grateful for the trials and triumphs, the joys and sorrows, and the people who have journeyed with me. May my story inspire others to trust in the goodness of God, who surprises us with favor, even in the darkest of times.
Understanding the Balance Between Surprise and Hindsight
As I reflect on my life and accomplishments, I’m struck by the delicate balance between surprise and hindsight. My journey, marked by unexpected twists and turns, has been shaped by the interplay of these two perspectives.
In 1979, I became a professionally certified Town Planner, a milestone that caught me off guard. The posting to Kwara State Town Planning Authority elevated my status and influence, but at the time, I didn’t fully grasp the forces at work behind the scenes. It was a surprise, a moment of triumph that left me wondering how it all happened.
Now, with the benefit of hindsight, I see how God’s hand was at work, guiding me, providing for me, and using me to accomplish His purposes. I can look back and identify the people, events, and circumstances that shaped me and moved me forward. I can appreciate the ways in which God was working to bring about a greater good, even in the midst of uncertainty.
The difference between surprise and hindsight is a matter of perspective and timing. Surprise is the initial reaction, often accompanied by uncertainty and awe. Hindsight, on the other hand, brings clarity and understanding, allowing us to see the bigger picture.
As I look back on my life, I’m grateful for the surprises that propelled me forward. I’m grateful for the challenges, the setbacks, and the triumphs. But I’m also grateful for the hindsight that has allowed me to see God’s hand at work, to appreciate the forces that shaped me, and to trust in His sovereign providence.
My story is a testament to the power of surprise and hindsight. It’s a reminder that God’s ways are not our ways, and that He is always working behind the scenes to bring about His purposes. As you reflect on your own life, I encourage you to embrace both surprise and hindsight. Allow yourself to be surprised by God’s goodness, and trust in His sovereignty. And when you look back, ask God to give you hindsight, to show you the ways in which He has been at work, and to deepen your trust in Him.
May we all learn to balance surprise and hindsight, trusting in God’s goodness and sovereignty, and may our lives be a testament, to His goodness and love.
The Turning Point: How Dr. Jide Maiye Changed My Life
In 1964, I returned to primary school in Class One after a four-year hiatus, uncertain about my future and struggling to find my footing. That’s when I met Dr. Jide Maiye, a Grade Three teacher who saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself – potential. He took an interest in me, not just as a student, but as a person, and his involvement in my life was a game-changer.
Dr. Maiye’s approach was unconventional, yet effective. He challenged me to study and sit for the Class 2 examination, with the goal of admitting me into his Class 3. I was hesitant at first, but his confidence in me was infectious. He shared the curriculum for Primary Class 2, provided teacher’s lessons, and practice examinations, and even developed a daily schedule to guide my studies.
But more than the academic support, Dr. Maiye offered something invaluable – mentorship. He supervised my studies, coached me, and encouraged me to push beyond my limits. His investment in me was not just about academics; it was about character development. He instilled in me a profound sense of confidence and determination that has lasted a lifetime.
Dr. Maiye’s efforts paid off. I passed the examination and was admitted into his Class 3. His continued support and guidance helped me excel academically, and I began to see myself as a capable and worthy individual. He didn’t just teach me; he transformed my life.
As I reflect on my journey, I’m reminded of the power of mentorship and the impact one person can have on another’s life. Dr. Jide Maiye’s story is a testament to the ripple effect of kindness, compassion, and investment in others. He didn’t just change my life; he changed the trajectory of my future.
Today, as I look back on my accomplishments, I recognize that Dr. Maiye’s influence extends far beyond the classroom. He showed me that with the right support, guidance, and encouragement, anyone can overcome obstacles and achieve greatness. His legacy lives on, inspiring me to pay it forward and invest in others, just as he did for me. To Dr. Jide Maiye, I say thank you. Thank you for believing in me, for challenging me, and for showing me the power of kindness and mentorship. Your impact on my life will forever be etched in my heart, and I’ll be forever grateful.
God’s Timely Provision: How My Brother’s Legacy Fueled My Education
As I reflect on my journey, I’m reminded of the profound impact my brother, Olayinka Megbolugbe, had on my life, even in his untimely passing. His death benefits, a unexpected windfall, became the catalyst for my academic pursuits, enabling me to take a significant step forward in my education.
At a time when financial constraints could have derailed my dreams, God’s provision was nothing short of miraculous. The death benefits my brother left me were a godsend, covering the costs of registration for the GCE examination, purchasing essential books, and funding my correspondence courses. These funds also supported me through the incidental expenses that came with pursuing my General Certificate Education at both the ordinary and advanced levels from the University of London.
It’s striking how God’s timing often precedes our greatest needs. My brother’s passing, though a painful loss, became a blessing in disguise. The financial resources he left behind allowed me to focus on my studies, unencumbered by the weight of financial worries. I was able to invest in myself, my education, and my future, without the burden of student loans or crippling debt.
This experience has deepened my trust in God’s sovereignty and provision. I recognize that my brother’s legacy was not just a coincidence, but a deliberate act of God’s kindness. His provision gave me the freedom to pursue my goals, to explore my potential, and to discover my purpose.
As I look back, I’m filled with gratitude for the ways in which God’s provision has shaped my life. The death benefits my brother left me were more than just a financial windfall; they were a tangible expression of God’s love and care for me. They remind me that, even in the darkest moments, God is always working behind the scenes, orchestrating circumstances to bring about His good purposes.
My story is a testament to the power of God’s provision, a reminder that He is always faithful to supply our needs. As I continue to walk with Him, I’m encouraged to trust in His goodness, knowing that He will always provide for us, even in the most unexpected ways.
Overcoming Adversity: My GCE Journey
My journey to academic success was not without its challenges. In 1971, as I prepared to take my GCE Ordinary Level papers, I faced a significant obstacle: jealousy and sabotage from some senior students. Throughout the year, I had studied clandestinely at night, hiding my efforts from pr curious eyes. My hard work paid off, and I achieved straight A’s, a feat that caught the attention of many.
However, not everyone was pleased with my success. A few senior students from my hometown were jealous and couldn’t understand how I managed to hide my efforts. They investigated me and discovered my secret: I had been returning to the school classroom at night, hiding under blankets and cardboard to study after lights out. Only senior students were allowed to study in the classrooms at night, and I had violated this rule.
When my actions were exposed, I was punished, and my name was entered into the school’s notorious Blackbook. Three entries would lead to expulsion, and I had already received two. A friendly senior tipped me off, warning me that I was in danger of being expelled. I knew I had to act fast.
I made the difficult decision to leave school and focus on studying for my GCE A-Level papers. It was a risk, but I knew it was necessary. I studied hard, determined to succeed despite the obstacles in my path.
When my A-Level results came out, I had done it. I had passed, and I was proud of myself. The principal, recognizing the injustice that had been done, issued a withdrawal certificate for me and wiped my disciplinary records clean.
Looking back, I realize that my experience was a testament to the power of resilience and determination. I could have let the jealousy and sabotage get the better of me, but I chose to rise above it. I chose to focus on my goals and work towards them, no matter what.
My story is a reminder that success is not always easy, but it is always worth it. I am proud of what I achieved, and I know that my experiences have prepared me for the challenges that lie ahead.
The Unsung Hero: How Jacob Olowosulu Changed the Trajectory of My Life
As I reflect on my journey, I’m reminded of the pivotal role Jacob Olowosulu played in my transition from uncertainty to triumph. When I was waiting for my GCE A’ Level results, I found myself at a crossroads, uncertain about my future. It was during this time that Jacob Olowosulu, a friend and senior, extended a helping hand, inviting me to live with him in Ilorin.
Jacob’s decision to take me in was a bold statement of faith in me, and it marked a turning point in my life. He provided for me, fed me, and created an environment that allowed me to focus on my studies. His support was unwavering, even when faced with criticism from those who questioned my decision to live with him.
One incident stands out in my mind. A person who had discovered that I was living with Jacob approached me, questioning my decision to live with someone who wasn’t a relative. This person was determined to scandalize me, suggesting that I was somehow compromising my values or dignity by accepting Jacob’s hospitality. But Jacob, being the man of conviction that he is, stood firm, refusing to be swayed by the opinions of others.
Jacob’s unwavering support and confidence in me gave me the courage to persevere, even when faced with adversity. He reminded me that I was worthy of love, care, and support, regardless of my circumstances. His actions spoke louder than words, demonstrating that true family is not just about blood ties, but about those who choose to invest in your life.
During my time with Jacob, I was able to focus on my studies, and my academic performance flourished. I began to see myself in a new light, as a capable and worthy individual, destined for greatness. Jacob’s influence extended beyond academics, as he modeled for me what it means to live a life of integrity, compassion, and generosity.
When the time came for me to enroll at the University of Ibadan, Jacob’s support was instrumental in my success. He encouraged me to pursue my dreams, and his prayers and words of wisdom continue to resonate with me to this day.
As I look back, I’m filled with gratitude for Jacob Olowosulu, a true unsung hero. His selfless act of kindness, his unwavering support, and his confidence in me have had a lasting impact on my life. He exemplifies the power of community, reminding us that we rise and fall together.
In a world where many are quick to criticize and slow to support, Jacob’s story is a beacon of hope. It reminds us that one person, armed with kindness and compassion, can change the trajectory of someone’s life. I’m forever grateful for Jacob Olowosulu, and I pray that his example will inspire others to be agents of change in the lives of those around them.
The Irony of Success: How My Family Turned Against Me
I recall the moment I completed my master’s degree from ABU Zaria, feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment as a certified Town Planner. I had worked hard to get there, and it felt amazing to have made it. My professional success led to promotion, and I was appointed Head of one of the Regional Offices of Kwara State Town Planning Authority. I was also seconded to my own home district as the overseer of land disputes, a position that gave me influence and authority.
But with my newfound power, I soon faced a challenge from an unexpected source: my own family. One of my brothers approached me, demanding that I change my last name from my father’s name to my grandfather’s name. I was taken aback, wondering why my family would want me to do such a thing.
It wasn’t until I spoke with my mother, tears streaming down her face, that I understood the true motivation behind their request. My relatives were worried that my father’s name would eclipse my grandfather’s name, and they saw my success as a threat to their own status. I was shocked. How could my own family be so petty, so jealous of my success?
I realized that my family’s reaction was a test of my character, a trial that would either break me or make me stronger. I chose to stand firm, refusing to change my name or be swayed by their pressure. I knew that my success was not about my family’s ego, but about the opportunities God had given me.
Looking back, I see that my journey has been one of overcoming obstacles, of rising above adversity. From my early struggles in school to my professional success, I have faced challenges and come out stronger. And through it all, I have learned to trust in God’s providence, to rely on His favor and guidance.
My story is a testament to the power of perseverance, of staying true to oneself in the face of opposition. I am proud of who I am, of where I come from, and of the successes I have achieved. And I know that no matter what challenges lie ahead, I will face them with courage, with faith, and with the knowledge that God is always with me.

As I’ve navigated the twists and turns of life, I’ve come to realize that God’s favor is not just a feeling, but a choice. It’s a choice to trust in His goodness, to seek His face, and to trust in His sovereignty.
