As human beings, we are susceptible to various sources of inspiration that shape our thoughts, emotions, and actions. However, not all inspirations are created equal. While some sources uplift and edify, others deceive and corrupt. As believers, we embody two natures – the human and the divine – and must discern the sources that influence us to avoid succumbing to Satan’s deception.
The Human Nature: Prone to Carnality
Our human nature, comprised of flesh and bone, is inherently canal and prone to sin. This nature is easily influenced by the world around us, including the entertainment industry’s carefully crafted messages. Movies, music, dance, and fashion often perpetuate carnality, indulging the flesh and fueling our desires.
The Divine Nature: Spirit-to-Spirit Influence
In contrast, our divine nature, born of the Holy Spirit, connects us to God’s spirit. This influence inspires righteousness, holiness, and a deepening relationship with our Creator. As Jesus told the woman at the well, we must worship God in spirit, not in flesh (John 4:24).
The Deception of Satan
Satan masquerades as an angel of light, deceiving many through subtle influences. He exploits our human nature, using carnal inspiration to lead us astray. The entertainment industry, often under his sway, peddles fleshly desires, masquerading as harmless entertainment.
The State of Christian Artistry
Regrettably, many Christian artists operate in the realm of carnality, occasionally referencing Jesus Christ without truly embodying His divinity. Their work may entertain, but it rarely inspires the spirit.
Discerning Inspiration
To avoid deception, we must discern the sources that inspire us. Ask yourself:
1. Does this inspiration uplift and edify my spirit, or does it indulge my flesh?
2. Does it draw me closer to God, or distract me from His presence?
3. Does it reflect the divine nature, or the human nature?
Conclusion
As believers, we must navigate the disparate sources of inspiration, recognizing the battle for our minds and hearts. Let us embrace the divine nature, seeking spirit-to-spirit influence from the Holy Spirit. By doing so, we will worship God in spirit and truth, avoiding the deception of Satan and the corrupting influences of carnality.
Practical Steps to Discern Inspiration
1. Seek God’s Word: Ground yourself in Scripture, allowing its truth to shape your thoughts and actions.
2. Test the Spirits: Evaluate inspiration against God’s Word, discerning whether it aligns with His character and teachings.
3. Cultivate Spiritual Discernment: Develop a sensitivity to the Holy Spirit’s leading, recognizing His gentle nudges and warnings.
4. Surround Yourself with Godly Influences: Choose friends, mentors, and entertainment that uplift and edify your spirit.
5. Embrace Accountability: Share your struggles and inspirations with trusted believers, seeking their guidance and support.
6. Prioritize Prayer and Fasting: Regularly seek God’s face, humbling yourself before Him and seeking His wisdom.
By embracing these practices, you will become increasingly discerning, able to distinguish between carnal and divine inspiration. Remember, the battle for inspiration is ongoing, but with God’s help, you can emerge victorious.
