Introduction
John Piper’s insight into the Gospel of Jesus Christ is profound: the Gospel does not cater to the sinner’s natural desires. Instead, it offers something entirely different, something that the sinner may not even desire naturally. This truth challenges our understanding of the Gospel and its purpose in our lives.
The Sinner’s Natural Desires
Naturally, humans tend to desire good feelings, blessings, healing, happiness, prosperity, and success. These desires are not inherently wrong, but they are often self-centered and focused on temporal satisfaction. The Gospel, however, offers something more profound and eternal.
The Gospel’s Radical Offer
The Gospel offers the sinner what they do not naturally desire: righteousness, holiness, forgiveness, heaven, and most importantly, Christ Himself. This offer is radical because it requires a fundamental transformation of our desires and priorities. The Gospel calls us to surrender our self-centeredness and embrace a life of obedience to God.
The Unregenerated Heart
The Bible describes the heart of the sinner as unregenerated, meaning that it is opposed to God and His ways (Romans 3:10-12). This is why the Gospel’s offer of righteousness and holiness seems foolishness to the natural man (1 Corinthians 1:18-25). Only through the work of the Holy Spirit can we be transformed and enabled to receive the Gospel’s offer.
Focus on Holiness
GIVA Ministries International”s focus on holiness is a reflection of the Gospel’s emphasis on righteousness and sanctification. This focus does not diminish the other promises of the Gospel, such as forgiveness and heaven. Rather, it highlights the confluence and synergy of the Gospel’s benefits, which are all centered in Christ Jesus.
The Confluence of Gospel Promises
In Christ, we find that the various promises of the Gospel are interconnected and inseparable. Righteousness, holiness, forgiveness, and heaven are all part of the package that Christ offers us. As we grow in holiness, we experience the reality of forgiveness and the promise of heaven. As we behold the glory of Christ, we are transformed into His image (2 Corinthians 3:18).
Conclusion
The Gospel of Jesus Christ is a radical offer that challenges our natural desires and priorities. It calls us to a life of righteousness, holiness, and surrender to God. As we focus on the Gospel’s promises, we find that they are interconnected and inseparable, centered in Christ Jesus. May we prioritize the Gospel’s offer and allow its power to transform our lives, shaping us into the image of Christ.
