As believers, we often find ourselves facing challenges and uncertainties that can leave us feeling distant from God. We may express our belief in Him, but when it comes down to it, do we truly trust His promises and attributes? The Bible reminds us that trust is a crucial component of our relationship with God. In James 4:8, we are encouraged to “draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” But what does it mean to draw near to God, and how can we cultivate trust in Him?

The Distance Between Us and God

The distance between us and God is not determined by physical proximity, but rather by the amount of trust we have in His promises and attributes. When we trust God, we are able to draw near to Him, and He, in turn, draws near to us. However, when we fail to trust Him, we can feel a sense of distance and disconnection.

The Consequences of Lack of Trust

When we don’t trust God, we often try to take control of our circumstances on our own. We may worry and fret, trying to figure out solutions to our problems. But this approach can lead to feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty. Instead of drawing near to God, we can become closer to our problems, making them seem insurmountable.

The Power of Trust

Trusting God is the key to drawing near to Him. When we choose to believe that God is in control of our lives and will handle our circumstances, we can experience a sense of peace and confidence. Trusting God keeps us from relying on our own understanding and instead, enables us to lean on His promises and attributes.

Practical Steps to Cultivating Trust

So, how can we cultivate trust in God? Here are some practical steps:

1. Draw near to God: Make time to spend with God, reading His Word, praying, and worshiping.

2. Choose to believe: Decide to trust God, even when it’s hard. Choose to believe in His promises and attributes.

3. Let go of worry and fear: Release your worries and fears to God, trusting that He will take care of you.

4. Lean on God’s promises: Instead of relying on your own understanding, lean on God’s promises and attributes.

Conclusion

Trusting God is the key to drawing near to Him. When we choose to believe in His promises and attributes, we can experience a sense of peace and confidence. By cultivating trust in God, we can overcome feelings of distance and disconnection, and instead, experience a deeper sense of intimacy and connection with Him. Remember, God is always with us, and He is waiting for us to draw near to Him.
