As I reflected on the GIVA Note “Iron sharpens iron” and its emphasis on unity within the Body of Christ, I was reminded of the remarkable story of Daniel and his three companions, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, in the book of Daniel. Their experience serves as a powerful illustration of the need and benefits of pursuing unity in our walk with God.
After the capture of Jerusalem and the exile of the Jews to Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar selected Daniel and his three friends to serve him due to their exceptional gifts, knowledge, and wisdom. However, when Daniel decided to reject the king’s offerings and follow a stricter diet, he didn’t consult his companions. Yet, in a remarkable display of unity and humility, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah chose not to dispute or begrudge Daniel’s decision. Instead, they patiently agreed to support him, demonstrating a remarkable spirit of oneness.
This selfless act of unity had a profound impact on their lives. As Proverbs 13:20 states, “He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.” By choosing to walk in unity with Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah benefited from his wisdom and leadership, which ultimately led to their own spiritual growth and excellence (Daniel 1:17).
