As I reflected on the GIVA Note “Iron sharpens iron” and its emphasis on unity within the Body of Christ, I was reminded of the remarkable story of Daniel and his three companions, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, in the book of Daniel. Their experience serves as a powerful illustration of the need and benefits of pursuing unity in our walk with God.
After the capture of Jerusalem and the exile of the Jews to Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar selected Daniel and his three friends to serve him due to their exceptional gifts, knowledge, and wisdom. However, when Daniel decided to reject the king’s offerings and follow a stricter diet, he didn’t consult his companions. Yet, in a remarkable display of unity and humility, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah chose not to dispute or begrudge Daniel’s decision. Instead, they patiently agreed to support him, demonstrating a remarkable spirit of oneness.
This selfless act of unity had a profound impact on their lives. As Proverbs 13:20 states, “He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.” By choosing to walk in unity with Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah benefited from his wisdom and leadership, which ultimately led to their own spiritual growth and excellence (Daniel 1:17).
Their experience teaches us that unity in the Body of Christ is not about uniformity, but about embracing our differences and working together towards a common goal. When we choose to put aside our individual interests and ambitions, we create an environment where the Holy Spirit can work freely, leading us to greater heights of wisdom, knowledge, and understanding.
In a world filled with division and strife, the Body of Christ must stand out as a beacon of unity and love. As we pursue unity, we will experience the sharpening effect of iron on iron, where our rough edges are smoothed out, and we become more effective instruments in God’s hands.
Let us learn from Daniel and his companions, embracing the power of unity in our own lives and in the Body of Christ. By doing so, we will become a testament to the transformative power of God’s love and grace.
Moreover, the story of Daniel and his companions shows us that unity is not about compromising our convictions or values. Daniel’s decision to reject the king’s offerings was based on his commitment to God’s laws and principles. Instead of pressuring him to conform, his companions chose to support him, demonstrating that unity can coexist with diversity of thought and conviction.
In the Body of Christ, we often face challenges that require us to stand together in unity. Whether it’s persecution, doctrinal differences, or personal conflicts, our ability to unite and support one another is crucial. By doing so, we demonstrate to the world that our love for God and for each other is stronger than any obstacle or challenge.
Furthermore, the story of Daniel and his companions highlights the importance of humility in achieving unity. Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah could have easily chosen to dispute or begrudge Daniel’s decision, but instead, they humbled themselves and chose to support him. This humility created an environment where God’s Spirit could work freely, leading them to greatness.
In conclusion, the story of Daniel and his companions serves as a powerful reminder of the need and benefits of pursuing unity in the Body of Christ. By embracing unity, humility, and diversity of thought, we can become a testament to the transformative power of God’s love and grace. Let us strive to create an environment where iron sharpens iron, and we become more effective instruments in God’s hands.
