As the Christmas season approaches, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of gift-giving, decorations, and festive gatherings. However, amidst all the excitement, it’s essential to remember the true reason for Christmas. This sacred holiday is not just a time for celebration, but also an opportunity for introspection, self-examination, and spiritual renewal.

At its core, Christmas is a reminder of our need for a Savior. The birth of Jesus Christ is an indictment of our sinful nature, and a declaration of God’s love and redemption. As the Bible says, “Unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11). If we don’t acknowledge our need for a Savior, Christmas will lose its intended significance.

As we prepare to celebrate the birth of our Lord, let us take a cue from the Advent season. Like Lent, Advent is a time for reflection, self-examination, and spiritual preparation. It’s a call to “prepare the way of the Lord” (Luke 1:16-17) by examining our hearts, minds, and actions.

Here are four ways to observe Advent and prepare for Christmas:

1. Meditate on your need for a Savior: Reflect on your sinful nature and your need for redemption. Let this realization awaken a sense of desperation and longing for the Savior.

2. Engage in sober self-examination: Take time to search your heart, thoughts, and actions. Ask God to reveal any areas of your life that need correction and guidance (Psalm 139:23-24).

3. Build God-centered anticipation and expectancy: Create a sense of excitement and wonder in your home, especially for children. Focus on the true meaning of Christmas, and let your enthusiasm for Christ be contagious.

4. Immerse yourself in Scripture: Spend time reading, meditating, and memorizing God’s Word. Let the Scriptures ignite a fire of passion and devotion in your heart (Jeremiah 23:29).

As we observe Advent and prepare for Christmas, let us remember that the true joy of the season is not found in material gifts or festivities, but in the gift of salvation and redemption that Jesus Christ offers. May our hearts be prepared to receive the Savior, and may our lives reflect the love, joy, and peace that He brings.
