Introduction

As I reflect on my life’s journey, now in my 70s, I am struck by the profound realization that God’s desires and mine have been convergent all along. The lyrics of Cece Winans’ song, “Refiner,” resonated deeply within me, unveiling an epiphany that has left me in awe. The trials, tribulations, and adversities I faced were not obstacles, but refining fires that purified my heart and transformed me into a holy vessel for the Holy Spirit’s workmanship.

The Refiner’s Fire

The song’s poignant words, “You’re a fire, the refiner, I wanna be consumed,” echo my deepest longing: to be transformed and purified for God’s purposes. I have always desired to be a living sacrifice, offered to God as a vessel of honor, sanctified and useful for His will (Romans 12:1, 2 Timothy 2:21). However, I did not fully comprehend the process of refinement, nor the forms it would take.

Trials and Tribulations: Refining Fires

In hindsight, I see that God employed trials, tribulations, and adversities to burn off impurities and weaknesses from my life. These experiences, though challenging, refined my faith, tested my character, and equipped me for ministry. The Refiner’s fire purified my heart, illuminating my path and aligning my desires with God’s.

Convergence of Desires

Now, I understand that my desires and God’s were never mutually exclusive. He desired my transformation, and I desired to be transformed. He wanted me to be a holy vessel, and I longed to be used for His glory. This convergence of desires is a testament to God’s sovereignty and loving guidance.

Lessons Learned

Looking back, I wish I had realized the ways of the Lord earlier. I would have known that His desires and mine were convergent, and that trials were opportunities for growth, not obstacles to overcome. Yet, with the benefits of hindsight, I see the beauty of God’s refinement.

A Living Sacrifice

As the song declares, “Take my life as a sacrifice, I wanna burn for You, only for You,” I recommit myself to being a living sacrifice, offered to God. May His fire continue to refine me, purifying my heart and empowering me for His service.

Reflection Questions

1. How have trials and tribulations refined your faith and character?

2. In what ways have you experienced the convergence of your desires and God’s?

3. What areas of your life require refinement, and how will you surrender them to God?
