Introduction
As believers, we often struggle with prioritizing our relationship with God. We claim to love Him, but our daily lives tell a different story. The truth is stark: God is either our top priority or not. There’s no middle ground.
Choosing God
It’s not about God choosing us; it’s about us choosing Him. Deuteronomy 30:19 (NIV) says, “This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.”
Priorities
Nobody is too busy for quality and quantity time with God. It’s a matter of priorities. Matthew 6:33 (NIV) reminds us, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
Idolatry
If God isn’t our number 1 priority, we risk being designated idolaters in Heaven. Our objects of worship and adoration become:
1. Career
2. Family (spouse, children)
3. Friends
4. Indulgences
5. Addictions
6. Distractions
These idols distract us from our faithfulness and commitment to God.
Consequences
Heavenly watchers document our idolatry, and consequences follow:
1. Spiritual stagnation
2. Lost blessings
3. Reduced effectiveness in ministry
4. Strained relationships
5. Inner turmoil
*Realigning Priorities*
To avoid idolatry, we must:
1. Recognize God’s sovereignty
2. Schedule quality time with Him
3. Seek His guidance
4. Prioritize obedience
5. Cultivate gratitude
Conclusion
Embracing God as our number 1 priority requires courage and commitment. It’s a big pill to swallow, but the rewards are eternal.
Reflection Questions
1. What are your top priorities?
2. How do you allocate time for God?
