Rejoicing in Suffering: Singularity in Purpose, Multiplicity in Modalities

Introduction
God’s purpose for suffering in our lives is to test, strengthen, and transform us, while our joy is sustained throughout this refining process. This may seem paradoxical, but the Bible teaches us that we can rejoice in suffering, not because of the suffering itself, but because of the purpose and promise behind it.
The Singularity of Purpose
God’s purpose for suffering is singular: to conform us to the image of His Son (Romans 8:29). However, the modalities through which He achieves this purpose are multiple and varied. The Bible teaches us that suffering produces endurance, character, and hope (Romans 5:3-4), and that it can also lead to joy, peace, and love (Romans 8:18, 2 Corinthians 4:16-18).
Focusing on Reward
One way to rejoice in suffering is to focus on the reward that awaits us in heaven. Jesus teaches us to “rejoice and be glad, for our reward is great in heaven” (Matthew 5:11-12). When we fix our minds on the greatness of the reward, our present pain seems small in comparison to what is coming (Romans 8:18). This focus on reward enables us to love our enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return (Luke 6:35).
Solidification of Hope
Another way to rejoice in suffering is to pay attention to the solidification of hope based on the future promises of God. Suffering can deepen our hope and strengthen our assurance of salvation (Romans 5:3-4). As we endure suffering, we develop endurance, character, and hope, which in turn strengthen our faith and confidence in God’s promises.
Strengthening of Capacity
God’s purpose is also to strengthen our capacity to endure suffering until we are refined. This process of refinement can be painful, but it is also a means of spiritual growth and maturity. As we rejoice in suffering, we develop a deeper trust in God’s sovereignty and a greater appreciation for His love and grace.
Christian Hedonism
Christian Hedonism teaches us that there are different ways to rejoice in suffering as Christians. All of these ways are expressions of the all-sufficient, all-satisfying grace of God. We can rejoice in suffering because of the reward, the solidification of hope, or the strengthening of our capacity to endure. Whatever the modality, God’s purpose is that our joy in suffering be sustained.
Conclusion
Rejoicing in suffering is not a masochistic or unrealistic expectation, but a biblical mandate. As we focus on the reward, solidify our hope, and strengthen our capacity to endure, we can rejoice in suffering, knowing that it is a means of spiritual growth and refinement. May we, like the apostle Paul, learn to rejoice in suffering, and may our joy, peace, and love be sustained throughout our refining process.
