Introduction

As believers, we yearn to experience God’s presence in our daily lives. The concept of practicing the presence of God involves finding constant pleasure in His divine company, speaking humbly and lovingly with Him in all seasons, and at every moment.

What is the Practice of the Presence of God?

The practice of the presence of God is a spiritual discipline that involves intentionally seeking and experiencing God’s presence in our lives. It is built on the promise in Exodus 33:14, where God says, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

Moses’ conversation with God in Exodus 33:12-23 highlights the importance of God’s presence. Moses insisted that if God’s presence did not go with them, they would not move forward. God’s presence would:

1. Be a sign to other nations that God was pleased with them (v. 16).
2. Distinguish them from other nations (v. 16).

Why is God’s Presence Essential?

Without God’s presence, nothing is achievable. His presence:

1. Guides us (v. 14).
2. Gives us rest (v. 14).
3. Empowers us to overcome challenges.
4. Distinguishes us from the world.

How to Practice the Presence of God Daily

1. Seek Daily
Set aside time for prayer and meditation.
1. Wait Upon the Lord

By incorporating the practice of God’s presence into our daily lives, we experience His guidance, empowerment and rest.

How is the Presence of God Different from the Presence of the Holy Spirit in the Believer?

The Presence of God vs. The Presence of the Holy Spirit

The Presence of God and the Presence of the Holy Spirit are interconnected yet distinct concepts in Christian theology.

Presence of God

1. Omnipresent: God’s presence is everywhere (Psalm 139:7-10).
2. Transcendent: God’s presence transcends space and time.
3. Sovereign: God’s presence represents His authority and power.
4. Personal Relationship: Intimate, loving relationship with God.

Presence of the Holy Spirit

1. Indwelling: The Holy Spirit lives within believers (John 14:17).
2. Empowering: Enables believers for service and witness (Acts 1:8).
3. Guiding: Leads believers in truth and decision-making (John 16:13).
4. Sanctifying: Sets apart believers for holy living (2 Thessalonians 2:13).

Key Differences

1. Scope: God’s presence is universal; the Holy Spirit’s presence is specific to believers.
2. Role: God’s presence represents sovereignty; the Holy Spirit’s presence empowers and guides.
3. Nature: God’s presence is transcendent; the Holy Spirit’s presence is immanent.

Biblical Foundations

– John 14:23 (God’s presence)
– John 14:17 (Holy Spirit’s presence)
– Romans 8:9-11 (indwelling Holy Spirit)

Practical Implications

1. Seek God’s presence for guidance and strength.
2. Yield to the Holy Spirit’s empowering presence.
3. Cultivate intimacy with God through prayer and scripture.
