Introduction
The Presence of God is a sacred and awe-inspiring experience that should evoke reverence and fear. However, modern-day worship leaders often confuse emotional responses to music with the Presence of God. This article explores the distinction between emotional experiences and the genuine Presence of God, highlighting the importance of a pure heart and the implications of being born-again believers.
The Old Testament Perspective
In the Old Testament, the Presence of God was often accompanied by fear and trembling. The Israelites understood that God’s holy nature could not tolerate sin or unrighteousness (Exodus 19:10-25, Leviticus 11:44-45). This fear was not merely a emotional response but a deep reverence for God’s majesty and power.
The New Testament Perspective
With the coming of Christ, the barrier between God and humanity was bridged (Hebrews 4:14-16). Believers are now able to approach God with confidence and boldness (Ephesians 3:12). However, this accessibility does not diminish the reverence and awe due to God’s Presence.
Born-Again Believers and the Presence of God
As born-again believers, we have been regenerated and empowered by the Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 5:17, Titus 3:5). This new life in Christ enables us to approach God with a pure heart, which is essential for encountering His Presence (Matthew 5:8, Psalm 24:3-4). While our sinful nature still lingers, our new identity in Christ allows us to boldly enter God’s Presence, seeking His face and grace (Hebrews 4:14-16).
Conclusion
The Presence of God is not to be taken lightly or confused with emotional experiences. As believers, we must cultivate a pure heart and approach God with reverence and fear, acknowledging His holy nature and our own sinful shortcomings. By examining our hearts and seeking God’s face, we can experience the awe-inspiring Presence of God in a way that transforms our lives and deepens our relationship with Him.
