Introduction
As a widower for almost a decade, I have learned what if feels like when you feel out of sorts with the Lord. As believers in general, we’ve all experienced it – that feeling of being “out of sorts” in our walk with God. It’s a sense of disconnection, a lack of motivation, and a feeling of being stuck. But what does it mean to be out of sorts in the Lord, and how can we overcome it?
Manifestations of Being Out of Sorts
Being out of sorts in the Lord can manifest in various ways, including:
– Spiritual dryness: Feeling disconnected from God, lacking motivation for prayer or Bible study
– Emotional turmoil: Experiencing anxiety, depression, or irritability
– Sinful patterns: Struggling with persistent sinful habits or thoughts
– Doubt and uncertainty: Questioning one’s faith, feeling uncertain about God’s will
– Disconnection from community: Feeling isolated from fellow believers
– Lack of fruitfulness: Feeling unproductive in ministry or service
Causes of Being Out of Sorts
So, what leads to this state of being out of sorts? Common causes include:
– Neglecting spiritual disciplines (prayer, Bible study, etc.)
– Allowing shocks from life traumatic events to transform your purview towards the Lord.
– Allowing sin to take root
– Failing to prioritize time with God
– Experiencing trials or tribulations
– Feeling overwhelmed or burnt out
– Choosing waiting to die as a lifestyle which is a close cousin of wanting to commit suicide
Getting Out of the Predicament
Fortunately, being out of sorts is not a permanent state, even if it feels that way in the moment. Here are some steps to help you get back on track:
1. Acknowledge and confess: Recognize your state and confess it to God.
2. Seek prayer and support: Reach out to fellow believers for prayer and encouragement.
3. Re-evaluate priorities: Assess your schedule and habits, making room for spiritual disciplines.
4. Return to foundational practices: Focus on prayer, Bible study, and worship. This is what rescued me from my troubles.
5. Remember God’s faithfulness: Reflect on His promises and past victories.
6. Take small steps: Gradually rebuild your spiritual habits and routines. This is key. Now I understand what my late wife used to say: just baby steps, honey.
Conclusion
Being out of sorts in the Lord is a common experience, but it’s not a permanent state. By understanding its manifestations, causes, and taking practical steps, you can overcome spiritual disconnection and return to a vibrant, fruitful walk with God. Remember, He is always near, waiting to restore and revive your spirit. He promised never to forsake us or leave us to our own devices.
